Congratulations to Chris Hofley who is the recipient of the 2017 R. Paul Kerston Community Educator Award.
Chris has had many roles at UBC – a Health Mentor, panelist, co-author and steering committee member.
As a member of the Health Mentors Steering Committee Chris has played an important role in the program’s development, implementation, and dissemination. He presented at Collaborating Across Borders in 2013 and published a paper in the journal The Clinical Teacher in 2014.
Chris’ innovative teaching style makes learning meaningful and fun. He shows students that, “Even though I am in a wheelchair, I can do almost anything an able bodied person can do. I just have a different way of doing it.”

The Kerston Award will be presented to Chris at the UBC Health Awards reception in February.

Paula Carr, a Community Strategist and Intercultural Neighborhood Developer with Collingwood Neighborhood House, has collaborated with UBC since 2004. She helped produce an award winning film titled, “Where Strangers Became Neighbours” that has been used in 6 or more UBC courses. This film illustrates the importance of an intercultural community development approach when working with an interprofessional team of community partners and diverse neighbourhood populations (e.g., immigrants, those living on low income, aboriginal people, people with disabilities, people with mental illness). Since 2011, Paula has been involved in a project called RC Interactive where she has supervised numerous UBC students doing community-based experiential learning projects. Paula is also co-author of a chapter that is a case study of RC INTERactive, the community-university partnership that has a community engagement component for students.

Keep this vital program alive for Canada’s future health leaders
The Health Mentors program needs your help to sustain this influential education initiative for Canada’s future health leaders. We urgently need additional funding to continue this unique educational experience that allows students from different health disciplines to learn from patients living with a chronic disease or disability.

Each year the Division works with a variety of organizations in the community to bring students the Patient and Community Voices Workshop Series. This Fall we’ve done workshops with Positive Living BC and the Recovery Narrative Project. The Division of Health Care Communication, in partnership with Fraser Valley Aboriginal Child & Family Services Society, has been recognized by a national Community-Service Learning Award from the J.W. McConnell Foundation for the “Aboriginal Community as Teacher” program.
