Patients in Education

Banner - Better copyVision:

Health professional education that fully integrates patient and community expertise and lived experience to maximise health and social outcomes.

Mission:

  • We work in partnership to include diverse, autonomous and authentic voices of patients in the education of health and social care professionals so that the care delivered is genuinely patient-centred.
  • We advocate for patients as active collaborators – teachers, assessors, curriculum developers and educational decision makers.

Membership:

  • Representatives of community organizations and individuals who wish to advance patient/community involvement in the education of health professionals, initially at UBC. View members’ biographies: click here.
  • The group arose from the ‘Where’s the Patient’s Voice in Health Professional Education?’ conference to implement recommendations set by the conference’s Vancouver Statement 2015.
  • Members meet monthly and receive requests to connect university educators with patients/community representatives who are needed for a range of educational activities.

We have helped university educators find patients to:

  • Serve on the UBC Health Awards Committee
  • Help physical therapy students practice patient interviewing skills
  • Judge the UBC Health Care Team Challenge student competition

A recent success for Patients in Education is the development of the Terms of Reference for the UBC Health Patient/Community Advisory Committee.
